Profile

Currently the manufacturing output contributes around 7.4% of GDP. The Government has placed great emphasis on industrial diversification and encouraging establishment of import substitution industries. The diversification of Tanzanian manufacturing sector, expanding domestic market and regional market of Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) and East African Community (EAC) provide Tanzania with a promising potential where investments can be directed in the manufacturing sector.


Chemical Industry

The chemical industry in Tanzania is dominated by the production of chemicals from pyrethrum extracts, production of paints, petroleum commodities, detergents, soaps, cosmetics and industrial gas.


Opportunities

• Manufacturing of phosphorus fertilisers (TSP, SSP, DAP) utilising the abundant rock phosphates from Minjingu, Arusha.

• Manufacturing of pesticides and other agrochemicals, utilising the abundant kaolin available at Kisarawe only 30 km from Dar es Salaam.

• Manufacturing of basic industrial chemicals such as dyes, solvents etc

• Manufacturing of chemicals from pyrethrum extracts.

• Manufacturing of paints and petroleum products.

• Manufacturing of medicinal and pharmaceutical preparations such as medicine, vaccines, antibiotics and vitamins

• Research and development opportunities in pharmaceuticals

• Manufacturing of perfumes, detergents, soaps and other cosmetics


 Other Potential Manufacturing Industries

• Manufacturing of pottery, china and earthenware

• Manufacturing of food, beverages and cigarettes

• Glass and glassware products

• Manufacturing of construction materials such as cement, concrete articles, gypsum and plaster products

• Manufacturing of electrical goods such as switch gears, electric cables, cookers, drycell and automobile batteries etc; and

• Gemstone cutting and polishing.

Other opportunities in the manufacturing sector include; animal-feed processing, beverages, steel and metal engineering, cement and ceramics, electrical engineering, electronic engineering, printing and publishing, fishnets, packaging, general processing and canning, bottles and glassware, automotive engineering, textiles and leather products.
